So on the local news channel 7 @ 6 I was on the news because I was harassed last night by a security officer at the westgate mall in spartanburg, sc.

There were a few things that they didn't put in the news story...

1) The officer called the Spartanburg City Police on me.
2) Refused to look at the card stating the law from DHEC & SCOPE.
3) When her supervisor told her she was in the wrong she refused to apologize..
4) She stood over my table the entire time I ate.

Next the mall says they were "Just trying to help."

If they were just trying to help then why did they...

-call the police on me.
-take my information & require my mother to go out to the vehicle to get my license to do a report against me.
-feel the need to tell the officer to apologize to me.
-need backup

My civil rights and my child's civil rights were violated yesterday. They demanded that I cover her or go to a bathroom. There is so much to the story it's ridiculous.

There is a poll on the home page of news channel 7 asking if breastfeeding in public offends you.
http://www.wspa.com/midatlantic/spa/home.html

it's in the middle on the right side...
also, the video/story is on their under video it is the first story that pops up.

Feel free to call westgate mall or write letters!

I have contacted the SC breastfeeding coalition representative and she's going to help but I really don't know from there?

I've never been on this site before but it was recommended by my local mom's forum.

Mama, I'm sorry you had this terrible experience. It still amazes me how when confronted with the facts of law some "officials" still feel they have the right to ignore it. We've had cases in which the mall challenged the law by saying it was "private property". Um, no, sorry it doesn't work that way!

The next move is entirely up to you. You could contact the local paper and see if they'd do a feature story on it, you could organize a nurse out (very public, like a protest) or a nurse in (very subtle, covertly blanketing the area with bfing moms). There's a great explanation of the differences here. Your local bfing coalition would know the specific ins and oouts of your state's laws, so definately keep working with them.

Slowly but surely we'll get back to a mindset where nursing is the norm, and people don't balk at seeing it.
