The following charts are based on data gathered by the World Health
Organization Working Group on Infant Growth. The results are published
in "An evaluation of infant growth: a summary of analyses performed
in preparation for the WHO Expert Committee on 'Physical Status:
the use and interpretation of anthropometry'". Doc WHO/NUT/94.8.
Geneva: World Health Organization, 1994. The charts were based on
226 infants who were breastfed for at least 12 months, with no solid
foods before 4 months of age. WHO and its partners are developing
a new international reference for infant growth based on a worldwide
sample of children fed according to WHO's recommendation; their
research will not be completed for several more years. The Working
Group's results should thus be considered research findings only,
and are not intended to be used to make medical decisions about
individual babies.
