On a recent SkyWest flight, a mother was told that according to company policy she was not allowed to nurse her child. SkyWest has since apologized and is currently re-training the in-flight staff regarding current corporate breastfeeding policies. Help us thank SkyWest for addressing this issue in such a timely and appropriate manner.

Ms. Kelly Mumford Director of Customer Relations SkyWest Airlines 444 South River Road St. George, Utah 84790 Dear Ms. Mumford As you are aware, a SkyWest employee recently told a mother to stop nursing her baby out of consideration for the other passengers on a flight. The flight attendant defended her request by claiming it was "company policy." The whole situation has been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. At first I was mad at the news, then happy to hear SkyWest apologize, but then mad again wondering if this had happened before, and puzzled at how to prevent this from happening again. Not just at SkyWest, but in any business where Mothers may need to feed their children. Thankfully, the mother in this case was strong enough to know that being told to stop nursing was not right and sought help via the press. From there, thousands of breastfeeding mother's across the country who participate in online communities such as ProMoM.Org, BreastfeedIsNormal.Org and Mothering.Com jumped to her defense. Thank you for your speedy response to this situation. Re-training the employee who bothered the nursing mother is a good start. Re-training the rest of the flight staff brings me hope that this might not happen again. You might find some of the wording used in US law (http://www.lalecheleague.org/LawBills.html) helpful for your re-training as well as some of these responses for use when passengers complain about a nursing mother: "I understand your discomfort, since law protects that mother's right to breastfeed in public, we cannot ask her to refrain or to move. Would you be more comfortable if we could move you to a different seat?" "While she may not be as discreet as she could be, she is protected by law in what she's doing. Would you like something to read?" "Yes, I realize your children are with you and can see that mother breastfeeding -- but she is doing something very normal and natural and I am prohibited by law from stopping her. Would your family like some snacks or drinks?" "According to law the baby has a right to nurse anywhere the mother is without needing to cover-up. I understand breastfeeding has not been so open in the past but many more mothers are choosing to nurse in public. Would you feel more comfortable reading a magazine to take your mind off of it?"
