On a recently aired episode of Sesame Street, during "Elmo's World,"
Elmo was thinking about babies. At least two real babies were shown
bottle-feeding and one illustrated baby was bottle-feeding. The
illustrated bottle-fed baby was then shown to grow up strong and
healthy.
These images are totally inconsistent with Sesame Street's own
campaign for healthy kids and healthy eating. Bottle-feeding is not an
example of healthy eating and in fact, according to UNICEF, "If every
baby were exclusively breastfed from birth for six months, an estimated
1.3 million additional lives would be saved and millions more enhanced
every year."
Please be consistent with your own healthy eating campaign and at
least remove the images of bottle-feeding from this "Elmo's World"
segment. Ideally you would show images of nursing babies, as
breastfeeding is the normal, natural way for human babies, and all
other fuzzy species, to eat.
Bottle-feeding has also been shown in past episodes as the way to feed
baby monsters and as the way for Trash Gordon to rescue himself from a giant baby. I would like to see Sesame Street exclude images of
bottle-feeding across the board as part of its campaign for healthy
eating and healthy kids.
