Breastfeeding should be highlighted as being especially important in an emergency. Please ask the March of Dimes to be clear in their position and ask them to encourage mothers to relactate.

The March of Dimes is a wonderful organization that works to improve awareness for protecting preemies and decreasing premature births. It is crucial that a mother breastfeed her baby, especially if it is a preemie. Studies show that preemies who are breastfed have lower rates of infection, disease, death, and higher rates of successful development and growth. Breastmilk and breastfeeding offer important protections for preemies because of their intense need to be held close, as in kangaroo care, and their higher susceptibility to infection due to less mature immune systems. All the body systems of a preemie are susceptible to more problems due to a lack of proper time to develop in utero. (http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;115/2/496 http://www.somersetmedicalcenter.com/110302.cfm) The importance of nursing during an emergency is especially relevant during times when there is no clean water, source for sterilization of supplies, and a lack of formula. I would think that the March of Dimes would want to do everything possible to encourage more moms to nurse their babies, especially during an emergency. Thank you for your statements supporting breastfeeding on your Hurricane Recovery page (http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/159_16943.asp), but I think you could be even more effective. Please make an effort to endorse and encourage relactation, especially during emergencies. Please add information to the FOOD and Infant Formula sections stating that breastmilk is the safest, easiest, and healthiest way to feed babies. Also, in your press kit (http://www.prnewswire.com/mnr/marchofdimes/22765/) and Katrina updates on your website (http://www.marchofdimes.com/aboutus/787_17158.asp), I would like to see information on why mothers should not be separated from their premature babies and why breastfeeding has special health and convenience properties during emergencies, along with stories of mothers breastfeeding, pumping for their babies, and relactating.
