Encourage Grey's Anatomy to stop portraying infant feeding with bottle images and encourage them to show breastfeeding. The ABC TV show Grey's Anatomy usually shows modern medical advances, but they are using outdated images of bottle feeding.

Lauren Tobin, ABC Media Relations, Anne Sweeney, Co Chairperson, Disney/ABC Television Group I was deeply saddened that during the October 30th episode of Grey's Anatomy, a woman who had just given birth was bottle feeding her newborn. On a show that portrays the latest in medical advances, I would have hoped that breastfeeding would have been displayed over bottle feeding. Today it is a well-researched fact that breast milk is the optimal nutrition for babies and breastfeeding is also best for mothers. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that formula-fed infants have higher risks for infectious diseases, death, obesity, diabetes, etc. Mothers who do not breastfeed are more likely to have breast cancer, osteoporosis and other serious health problems. For the complete AAP statement see: http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;115/2/496 Part of the reason that more babies are not breastfed is the lack of breastfeeding images in popular media, especially when compared to bottle-feeding images. Although your referral to formula feeding may not have been intentional, it does send a subtle message that bottle feeding is medically preferred to your audience. More images of mothers nursing their babies on television could go a long way in helping our culture to remember and consider healthier options in their lives. In the future, please consider the influence you have on America. Please, in future episodes, do NOT show bottles or bottle feeding associated with babies. If ABC took this step, it would truly help the company to further its goal of building “A Better Community.” Sincerely,
