American Chemistry Council 1300 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, VA 22209 Mr. Thom Metzger Marketing and Member Communications Director - American Chemistry Council Dear Mr. Metzger, In the February 6, 2021 issue of Fortune Magazine, there is an advertisement for the American Chemistry Council. This advertisement features a picture of a baby in an incubator with the tag line “essential2safeandwarm.” At the bottom it says “It is what makes incubators, baby bottles and car seats possible. It is chemistry.” I was disheartened by this well intended but misguided advertisement. To equate a baby bottle with an incubator or car seat is irresponsible. (http://www.aap.org/advocacy/bf/brhist.htm) The standard argument that some mothers choose to use bottles (for breastmilk or for formula) is not a valid excuse for your ad promoting bottles as essential for safety. Since the American Chemistry Council is concerned with scientific research, I am sure that you are aware that breast milk is the optimal nutrition for babies and breastfeeding and is also best for mothers. I earnestly hope that the American Chemistry Council will reexamine its decision to use baby bottles as an example of an essential invention in its advertisements. Please respond with information about your plan to release a more suitable ad that does not imply bottles are essential to safe infant feeding; perhaps an ad that features a Supplimental Nursing System (SNS) would be more appropriate.
